Nayereh Akhavan is a member of Iran’s parliament. If that doesn’t tell you she’s a crazed religious fanatic who uses an ancient book instead of common sense to make decisions, then her rulings will. A member of the Judicial Council, she mainly discusses cases involving crime and punishment. In Iran, that normally means crime and all sorts of gruesome deaths.
Akhavan stated that she believed public executions would be for the greater good of Iran, claiming they would have a deterrent effect on crime. Iran executes people for horrific offenses like insulting the prophet Muhammad (pigs be upon him) and being gay. When questioned about her statement, she claimed anyone who opposed the Islamic system of public execution had been “educated in the western system.” In other words, she doesn’t care about the opinions of non-Islamists.
Akhavan has also opposed a ban on child marriages because there are ten year olds who have “reached sexual and intellectual puberty.” Her reasoning: forbidding child marriage would go against sharia. Apparently she wants children to be molested because a 1400-year-old book written by a warlord and his followers says it’s acceptable… and liberals still say that Islam is a misunderstood religion of peace and kindness. Sigh.
